This rather unusual curious alpine primula grows naturally in quite dry alpine meadows and around shaded mossy rocks in the mountains of north-central China. It is not easily obtained so we are delighted to offer it here. In the garden give it a soil with lots of leaf mould and a cool shaded not wet spot. A good garden habitat is at the fringe of woodland. Flowering time is May into June. It has proven to be hardy in the UK and Ireland. Flowering height is about 30cm (1 foot). The bright red flowers (up to 3 whorls) are quite unusual in that the petals reflex (turn back). Multi-flower stemmed when established.

This botanically interesting primula species is a great addition to the bog garden, pond edge or damp border. It has large leaves, and flowers at a height of 40cm. This species is deciduous.

Each flower stem produces over 20 nodding individual flowers during late spring to early summer. The whole plant forms quite an impressive statuesque feature.

It used to be called Sredinskya; an interesting point of conversation when trying to impress your dinner guests! Its origin is western Caucasia in wet alpine meadows and stream sides.

Flowering sized quality plants supplied ex pots with root-ball. (loose compost removed) Garden ready.

Primula japonica and its many forms are essential plants for the spring bog garden or wet woodland. Flowering time is May and height at its peak is 60cm (2 feet). A very typical candelabra Primula it has stunning whorled tiers of beautiful bright purple pink flowers standing majestically above striking mid-green luxuriant foliage. Plants supplied are of flowering size and bare-root.

A Japanese import some 130 years ago, Primula japonica is a classic garden plant of easy culture. A very typical candelabra Primula it has striking whorled tiers of rich colours standing majestically above striking mid-green luxuriant foliage. It is very tolerant of the wettest heavy soils; in fact it will thrive under such conditions. Flowering time is May and height at its peak is 60cm (2 feet). It will grow in full light in the bog garden but given some dappled shade will grow in most situations where the soil remains moist at all times.

It is very tolerant of the wettest heavy soils; in fact it will thrive under such conditions. Flowering time is May and height at its peak is 60cm (2 feet). Being the earliest of the “ponicas” to flower (late April) it brings a welcome cheer to the spring bog garden. Primula japonica forms a large clump which is easily divided and will self seed all around given damp dappled conditions. It will grow in full light in the bog garden but given some dappled shade will grow in most situations where the soil remains moist at all times. The variety on offer is a selection which I call ‘Peninsula Pink’. It is a strong grower and the foliage is also very attractive – having a variegated appearance during summer.

This easy going primula has a long flowering season; from May to September. The deep purple flowers are arranged in disc-like horizontal heads and carried on white heavily mealy stems about 30 cm (1 foot) tall. Primula capitata grows well in many situations but a soil which has steady moisture content is best. Well drained soils that never dry out are ideal. Dappled light conditions such as the fringe of woodland or anywhere that does not receive very hot sun is best; east facing aspect is good. This primula is an excellent subject for container gardening; pots, planters, tubs, troughs and sink gardens being employed to good effect. P. capitata comes from east Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan where it thrives in a wide range of alpine habitats at quite high altitudes. Plants are supplied bare-root mature flowering sized, one year old ready for planting or potting.

This outstanding garden primula species comes from north-west Yunnan where it grows in open pine forest and rocky damp pastures. In the garden a dappled woodland site is ideal and in soils that remain moist but are not excessively wet. It assorts well with other classic garden plants such as Rhododendron and enjoys the same conditions; rich peaty acid soils. It is a wonderful garden plant which has been cultivated for about 100 years since it was introduced in 1914 by the famous Scottish plant collector George Forrest. This strong growing perennial unusual primula has attractive spikes of pendant scented lavender blue mealy-faced flowers in May / June; timing is dependent on season and locality. The flowering stem holds the flower head about 30 cm (1 foot) above the foliage. Plants are supplied as bare-root mature flowering sized plants; they will flower next growing season.
